[br][br]This year, we have seen that instead of adding a 2MP or 5MP or (many more !) secondary sensor for depth / bokeh, OEMs provide a ToF module for the same.[br][br]Want to know more about it ? Let's Begin !! [br][br][strong]ToF Sensors: What's That ?[/strong][br][br]A ToF camera uses infrared light (lasers invisible to human eyes) to determine depth information. The sensor emits a light signal, which hits the subject and returns to the sensor. The time it takes to bounce back is then measured and provides depth-mapping capabilities. This provides a huge advantage over other technologies, as it can accurately measure distances in a complete scene with a single laser pulse.[br][br]
[br][br]Since nothing travels faster than light, the system can work pretty fast to get the job done, provided the circuitry and algorithms can keep up.[br][br][strong]Working Principle[/strong][br][br][strong]The working mechanism of a ToF sensor is:[/strong][br][br][ul][li]The Time of Flight sensor comprises of a light emitting source, usually a solid-state laser or an LED.[br][/li][/ul][ul][li]The light being emitted is in the near-infrared range (roughly 850nm) so it is not visible to the eye.[br][/li][/ul][ul][li]The emitted light will bounce back from the subject, but the sensor is also receiving ambient light, and natural light also contains infrared light.[br][/li][/ul][ul][li]In order to not get the signals mixed up, the light is pulsed or modulated by a continuous-wave source, typically a sinusoid or square wave.[br][/li][/ul][strong]Areas Of Use[/strong][br][br]The ToF sensor in a smartphone can be used in several ways:[br][br][strong]Smartphone Rear Side:[/strong][br][br]The most common implementation of a ToF sensor is for better potrait shots.[br][br][ul][li]Oppo, in its R17 Pro implemented ToF to enable 3D scanning, so a user can scan a subject or object.[br][/li][/ul][ul][li]Honor used this tech for both improving potrait shots and also for enabling a Kinect-like gaming experience. By plugging the View 20 into TV and having the 3D camera face you, you can play darts and skiing games using your body.[br][/li][/ul][strong]Smartphone Front Side:[/strong] [br][br]Adding a 3D ToF sensor in the front side could help improve facial recognition technology. This technology is faster and more accurate than today’s structured light sensors used by Apple’s iPhone, Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro, and the Oppo Find X.[br][br][strong]Reviews & Conclusions[/strong][br][br]The ToF sensor has a bright future in the smartphone world as it is capable of advanced and better imaging technologies enabling brilliant photography.[br][br][br][strong]Source:[/strong] [a href="https://www.digit.in/mobile-phones/what-is-time-of-flight-camera-sensor-and-what-does-it-do-45994.html"]Digit[/a] | [a href="https://3dscanexpert.com/android-phones-will-get-tof-depth-sensors-for-3d-scanning-faces/"]3DScan Expert[/a] |
