[br][h2]Running Windows 10 From a USB Drive[/h2][p]First, sign into your current Windows 10 computer to create a Windows 10 ISO file that will be used to install Windows 10 onto the USB drive.[p]To do this, browse to the[a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10"]Download Windows 10 website[/a]. This site offers the latest edition of Windows 10, which at this point is the[a href="https://in.pcmag.com/gallery/126021/windows-10-october-2018-update-the-best-new-features"]Windows 10 October 2018 Update[/a], or Windows 10 version 1809. Click the Download tool now button. Then double-click the downloaded MediaCreationTool.exe file to install the tool.[p][div][amp-img height="871" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633627-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="1405" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633627-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][p][div][div][div][/div][/div][/div][p]At the first screen for "Applicable notices and license terms," click the Access button. Then click the option to "Create installation media for another PC" and click Next. At the "Select language, architecture, and edition" screen, confirm that all of the options are correct and then click Next.[p][div][amp-img height="614" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633628-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="1164" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633628-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][p][p]You will then need to choose what media you want to use. Given the option between a USB flash drive and an ISO file, click ISO file. Then click Next.[p][div][amp-img height="630" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633629-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="1184" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633629-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][p][p]Choose a location on your hard drive to store the Windows.iso file. Click Save. Windows 10 generates the necessary ISO file. When the process is done, click Finish.[div][div][div][/div][/div][/div][p][div][amp-img height="608" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633630-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="1156" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633630-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][p][h2]Running WinToUSB (With Caveats)[/h2][p]Next, it's time to enlist the aid of[a href="https://www.easyuefi.com/wintousb/"]WinToUSB[/a]. This program is effective and user friendly, but it suffers from one major drawback.[p]The[strong]free version does not support the current flavor of Windows 10[/strong]—specifically the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, or Windows 10 version 1809. And Microsoft no longer offers older ISO files of Windows 10 at its download site. If you want to make a USB copy of Windows 10 version 1809 using WinToUSB, you'll have to shell out $29.95 for the Professional version.[p]However,[strong]there is a trick[/strong]that will let you download an ISO file of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, or Windows 10 version 1803, which you can use with the free version of WinToUSB. (Kudos to technology writer Mauro Huculak for revealing this option in an article at[a href="https://pureinfotech.com/download-windows-10-1803-iso-file-after-1809-releases/"]Pureinfotech.com[/a].) Here's how it works.[p]Open[a href="https://www.pcmag.com/review/338998/microsoft-edge"]Microsoft Edge[/a]on your current Windows 10 computer. Copy and paste the following URL in the address bar:[a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10iso"][strong]https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO[/strong][/a].[div][div][div][/div][/div][/div][p][div][amp-img height="726" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633631-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="1179" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633631-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][p][p]Yes, that takes you to Microsoft's Download Windows 10 website. But wait, there's more. Right-click on the page and select "Inspect element" to open the page's code.[p][div][amp-img height="692" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633632-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="1177" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633632-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][p][p]In the right pane, click the down arrow on the top menu bar and select the option for Emulation.[p][div][amp-img height="323" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633633-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="977" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633633-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][p][div][div][div][/div][/div][/div][p]In the Mode section, open the drop-down menu for User agent string and change the entry to Apple Safari (iPad).[p][div][amp-img height="692" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633634-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="1177" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633634-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][p][p]The page in the left pane should automatically refresh. If not, refresh it manually. Click the drop-down menu for Select edition and select the option for the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. Click Confirm.[p][div][amp-img height="692" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633635-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="1177" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633635-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][p][p]At the next screen, choose your language, then click Confirm. On the Downloads page, choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the Windows 10 April 2018 Update and then click Save to download the file. After the file has been downloaded, change the User agent string in Edge from Apple Safari (iPad) back to Microsoft Edge (Default). Close the right pane by clicking the X.[div][div][div][/div][/div][/div][p][div][amp-img height="576" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633636-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="980" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][i-amphtml-sizer][/i-amphtml-sizer][img decoding="async" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633636-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y"][/amp-img][/div][div][amp-img height="576" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633636-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="980" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][br][/amp-img][/div][h1][amp-img height="576" layout="responsive" placeholder="" src="https://assets.pcmag.com/media/images/633636-download-windows-10.png?thumb=y" width="980" i-amphtml-layout="responsive"][a href="https://in.pcmag.com/operating-systems-and-platforms-and-price/113167/how-to-run-windows-10-from-a-usb-drive?amp=1" target="_blank"]Source[/a][/amp-img][/h1] |
