10 Awesome Games We Can't Wait To Play In 2018

There is no doubt that 2017 was a really great year for gaming. And 2018 promises to be even better. We can look forward to becoming a superhero, fighting alongside familiar pop culture characters, slaying gods, and facing off against hordes of flesh-eating creatures among other things. In anticipation of the year that lies ahead, we’ve put together a list of just some of the amazing games we are excited about releasing in 2018.

1. God of War – Father And Son

Slaying mythological creatures and looking like a badass while doing it is something that God of Warprotagonist Kratos excels at. What the god slaying anti-hero has never really been good at is showing off his softer side (yes, apparently, he has one). The latest game in the God of Warfranchise sees our anti-hero teaming up with his son as they smash bash and crush all who stand in their way.

While the over the top action we’ve come to expect from the beloved series is still present and the game looks better than ever, it’s the relationship between Kratos and his offspring that has us excited to step back into the mythological shoes of this anti-hero. Kratos will have to face off against all manner of foul creatures while dealing with all the challenges of being a father to his son, Atreus.

From what we have seen so far it looks as if the game’s narrative will focus heavily on this fragile relationship as Kratos tries to master the rage that has haunted him all these years. Also, the game takes place in Norse mythology. Instead of facing off against the likes of Zeus and Poseidon, Kratos could instead be battling Loki, Odin and maybe even the god of thunder himself.

2. Far Cry 5 – In God We Trust

With extremist movements and scary doomsday cults currently making headlines, Ubisoft has decided to jump aboard the crazy train with the latest Far Cry game. Far Cry 5 takes place in the rural setting of Montana, where the picturesque setting hides a terrible secret.

Seeing himself as the saviour of Hope County, charismatic (and all around crazy) preacher Joseph Seed has risen to prominence and taken it upon himself to protect the town and its citizens (whether they like it or not). Along with his militaristic cult, Eden’s Gate, Joseph takes control. Of course, it’s up to our unnamed protagonist (You) to save the day with a hail of bullets and over the top explosions.

For the first time in the series, players will be able to take along a companion to aid them in their quest. The best part? One of these companions is a cute and loyal dog named Boomer.

Far Cry 5 promises to be a more narrative focused experience where the player will meet characters with varying views and opinions. Don’t fear as this more story driven approach will not take away from the much loved “shoot everything that moves” aspect of the series. There will be enough gunfights and explosions to satisfy most shooter fans.

3. Spider-Man – Marvel’s Arkham Asylum?

Insomniac’s Spider-Man game seems to tick all the right spider-shaped boxes. When they first revealed footage of the upcoming game, even the most hardcore fans had to admit that it looked breathtaking and most importantly fun.

With its combination of Arkham-style combat, environmental attacks and web-swinging, the latest Spider-Man game might be exactly what the fans have always wanted.

Following everybody’s favourite wisecracking web-slinger, the game sees Peter Parker having settled into being the red and blue clad superhero. All seems well until a new gang called the Inner Demons emerges. Led by the nefarious Mr Negative, Peter is once again forced save New York.

With Insomniac’s brilliant track record, the gaming future of Spider-Man couldn’t be in better hands.

4. Code Vein – Blood Souls

With the fantastic (and sadistic) Dark Souls series starting the whole “tough as nails, yet rewarding as hell” genre, it was only a matter of time before we’d get a game that combined this much loved (and hated) formula with pop cultures most-loved (and hated) undead creatures.

Code Vein takes the Dark Soulsformula and combines it with a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by vampires (sadly, not the shiny kind). This unholy combination makes for a game that is beautiful yet punishing, a game that builds upon this familiar formula by adding its own unique twist.

In a future where a mysterious event brought the world as we know it to its knees lies a hidden society of Revenants called Vein. This stronghold is inhabited by the last few left fighting for survival after the cataclysmic event. Cursed or blessed with strange gifts that enable them to exchange memories, these Revenants face an unyielding lust for blood. Players take on the role of one of these Revenants as they, and a companion of their choice, venture into the world beyond their stronghold to face off against all manner of unholy creatures.

With its anime-inspired visuals, intriguing narrative and tough-yet-rewarding combat, Code Vein is definitely a game to look out for.

5. Kingdom Hearts 3 – Mickey And The Gang Are Back

Kingdom Hearts 3 is a game many have been patiently waiting for, sifting through each piece of information they might discover about it no matter how small. Now, after all this time, the game is almost (hopefully) finally here.

What started as a crazy idea of combining characters from The House of Mouse and developer Square Enix has evolved into a convoluted, yet immersive franchise that many adore. Sora once again returns as the game’s main protagonist joined by the dynamic Disney duo of Goofy and Donald.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will kick off where KH: Dream Drop Distance left off as Sora searches for the seven guardians of light. The inclusion of characters and levels based on popular Disney franchises such as Toy Story, Big Hero 6 and Tangled should have many out there excited for the game. Kingdom Hearts 3 will incorporate new gameplay elements including new ways to traverse your environments, new enemies to fight and Keyblade transformations which will give Sora more options during combat.

With Disney acquiring both the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, there’s still hope that Yoda or even Captain America might make an appearance.

6. Red Dead Redemption 2 – Howdy partner

Few will deny that one of the most hotly anticipated games of 2018 is Rockstar’s follow up to the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption. While not much has been revealed about the sequel, one thing is for certain, it looks spectacular. With many seeing the first game as one of developer Rockstar’s finest games to date, Red Dead Redemption 2 has much to live up to. Personally, as long as we can explore more of the rugged, outlaw-filled and deadly west I’ll be happy. What more could one ask for than sipping a whiskey in a saloon, shooting a few bank robbers, maybe skinning a coyote or two and then heading off into the sunset?

Although Rockstar has been quite coy about the game, we know that players will don the well-worn snake leather boots of anti-hero Arthur Morgan, a member of the outlaw Van der Linde gang. Other than that, there isn’t much we do know. Of course, there are loads of speculation on whether characters from the first game will make an appearance and on how the story will unfold. Luckily, we don’t have long to wait before the game finally releases.

7. Sea of Thieves – It’s A Pirate’s Life For Me

When developer Rare’s Sea of Thieveswas first announced we weren’t sure what to expect beyond the games rum-filled piratey title. After seeing footage of the seafaring pirate multiplayer game in action, I have to admit I’m excited to step aboard my own ship to conquer the seven seas.

Instead of focusing on the realistic side of being a pirate (you know, scurvy, hangovers, syphilis and missing limbs), Rare instead embraces the more romanticised side of being a rum chucking sea dog out to find some booty. Sea of Thieves is all about teamwork as you and your friends explore the cartoony open seas in search of fame and fortune. Players will assume different piratey rolls such as manning the cannons, navigating the seas, hoisting the sails and steering the ship.

8. Monster Hunter: World – Gotta Catch Them All!

Monster Hunter: World embraces that which has resided within humans since the beginning of time, getting together with buddies and caching/killing creatures bigger than us. It’s a primal need that the Monster Hunter franchise taps into very successfully.

Monster Hunter: World sees players joining up with others from across the world as they hunt down the most feared creatures that inhabit each of the game’s environments. Not only does this task require teamwork, but not ending up dead will mean thinking on your toes and planning ahead. In order to ensure that you don’t end up on the pointy side of some creature’s tusk, player’s will need to learn to craft items, improve their skills and most importantly work together.

The world of Monster Hunter: World is filled with all kinds of dangerous creatures and how you decide to take them on is entirely up to you as you freely explore the game’s open world. Track, capture or kill your target and try not to die while doing this is the aim of the game.

9. Anthem – BioWare’s Other Sci-fi Game

Mass Effect: Andromeda might not have been what many fans were expecting, and it looks like we won’t be getting another Mass Effect game anytime soon (insert sad face emoji). Instead, BioWare has announced their next sci-fi game, Anthem.

Players take on the role of one of the game’s armour clad Freelancers tasked with protecting their walled society from the dangers that lurk outside. Each Freelancer is equipped with a Javelin suit (basically, a kick-ass exo-suit) which is fully customisable to fit each player’s combat style.

BioWare has been secretive about the game only releasing a bit of gameplay footage (which looks gorgeous) and revealing that the game will support 4 player co-op as well as have a single player campaign. There is little doubt that BioWare is trying to take on the multiplayer giant, Destiny. We’ll have to wait and see if Anthem is succesful or not.

10. Days Gone – More Zombies!

While many might think of Days Goneas just another The Last of Us clone, the developers of the game have tried to differentiate it from the current slew of zombie games out there at every opportunity. Instead of the narrative linear focused approach, Days Gone drops players into an open-world where zombie (or in this case freaker) hordes roam killing all they come across.
