Google Maps is set to enhance the user experience for public transport users with alerts for delays when taking a bus, train or subway. The new feature is now available in India and other select cities.[br][br][br]
[br][br]Google Maps is adding an all-new public transit feature for its Android and iOS users, which will start showing public transit crowdedness predictions to users. The new transit crowdedness predictions will show alerts for delays on bus, train, and subway rides alongside predicting how crowded the public transport will likely be. [br][br]Much like how Google Maps works for traffic conditions, the new feature will predict possible delays in public transit. The new feature will alert Google Maps users on Android and iOS on how crowded public transit is likely to be. [br][br]Google Maps has been on a spree this month when it comes to rolling out features to users. Earlier this month, Google Maps rolled out real-time bus travel information and live train status. The company also introduced an auto-rickshaw recommendation with the last update. [br][br]"Google Maps introduced live traffic delays for buses, forecasting bus delays in hundreds of cities worldwide, ranging from Atlanta to Zagreb to Istanbul to Manila and more. This improves the accuracy of transit timing for over sixty million people. This system, first launched in India three weeks ago, is driven by a machine learning model that combines real-time car traffic forecasts with data on bus routes and stops to predict better how long a bus trip will take," explains Alex Fabrikant, Research Scientist, Google Research.[br][br]Google's machine learning model in addition to road traffic delays, also takes into account details about the bus route, as well as signals about the trip's location and timing. [br][br]"Even within a small neighbourhood, the model needs to translate car speed predictions into bus speeds differently on different streets. In the left panel below, we colour-code our model's predicted ratio between car speeds and bus speeds for a bus trip," adds Fabrikant.[br][br]"To learn more about how crowdedness levels vary around the world, we analysed aggregated and anonymised reports of crowdedness from Google Maps users from October 2018 to June 2019 during peak commuting hours (6 am - 10 am), and identified which lines had the highest number of crowdedness reports," said Taylah Hasaballah, Product Manager, Google Maps. [br][br]Notably, Google Maps now shows live traffic delays for buses in India as announced earlier this month.[br][br]Source : timesnownews. com |
