Google maps shows speed limits, camera traps in 40+ countries

Google Maps users in more than 40 countries can receive real-time speed limit and speed camera alerts.[br][br]Poached from Google subsidiary Waze, the feature began appearing in select markets two years ago; folks in Los Angeles, New York City, and Minnesota reported seeing the limited function early this year.[br][br]Now, the tech titan is rolling it out to iOS and Android devices across the globe.[br][br]Google confirmed with TechCrunch the full list of supported countries: Andorra, Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, the Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Tunisia, the UK, the US, and Zimbabwe.[br][br]There is no word on when, or if, the new ability will be available to all users worldwide.[br][br][br]Android users have the added pleasure of reporting mobile and stationary speed camera locations. Both platforms highlight those updates during a drive.[br][br]Speed limits appear in the bottom left corner of the app, based on screenshots from Android Police (above), while speed traps show up as icons on the digital road.[br][br]Google hasn’t officially announced the features’ expansion, which, as Android Police’s Hagop Kavafian pointed out, suggests it is not yet live for everyone.[br][br]Users in France, Germany, and Switzerland reportedly aren’t seeing the radar trap locations—likely because they are illegal in those countries, according to Engadget.[br][br]France-based Kavafian, meanwhile, said Waze displays them “just fine.” Police in the country are allowed to check mobile phones for illegal apps and levy fines or even confiscate vehicles if found.[br][br]Google did not immediately respond to Geek’s request for comment.[br][br]More on Geek.com:
